How discount percentage works

A discount percentage is calculated off the original price. To find the amount saved, multiply the original price by the discount percentage and divide by 100. Subtract that from the original price to get the final sale price.

Example

An item priced at 2,000 with a 25% discount: savings = 2,000 × 25 ÷ 100 = 500. Final price = 2,000 − 500 = 1,500.

Stacking multiple discounts

When two discounts apply (say 20% off, then an extra 10% off), they don't simply add up to 30%. Each discount applies to the already-reduced price, so the combined effect is usually less than the sum — in this example, about 28% total.

Frequently asked questions

Is a bigger percentage always a better deal? Not necessarily — compare the final price and quality, not just the percentage off, especially when original prices are inflated before a "sale."

How do I calculate the original price from a sale price? Divide the sale price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). For example, a 1,500 sale price at 25% off means the original was 1,500 ÷ 0.75 = 2,000.
