How GPA is calculated

GPA = (sum of grade points × credit hours) ÷ total credit hours. Each letter grade maps to a point value (A = 4.0, B+ = 3.3, and so on). This calculator uses the standard 4.0 scale followed by HEC and most Pakistani universities, though some institutions apply small variations — check your university's official grading policy if you need an exact figure.

GPA vs CGPA

GPA (or SGPA) reflects a single semester's performance. CGPA is the cumulative average across all semesters. To get your CGPA, calculate each semester's GPA, then take a credit-weighted average across all semesters combined — not a simple average of GPAs.

Typical CGPA benchmarks in Pakistan

Most universities require a minimum CGPA of around 2.0–2.5 to avoid academic probation. A CGPA of 3.0+ is generally considered good and is often the baseline for scholarship eligibility, while 3.5+ is competitive for graduate admissions and top-tier job applications.

GPA systems in other countries

USA: Uses the same 4.0 scale as this calculator. A 3.0 is generally "good," 3.5+ is competitive for graduate school, and 3.7+ often qualifies for Latin honors (cum laude and above) depending on the institution.

UK: Universities don't typically use GPA — degrees are classified as First (70%+), Upper Second/2:1 (60-69%), Lower Second/2:2 (50-59%), and Third (40-49%). If you need to convert a UK percentage to US-style GPA for an application, a rough guide is: First ≈ 3.7-4.0, 2:1 ≈ 3.3-3.7, 2:2 ≈ 2.7-3.3.

India: Many universities use a 10-point CGPA scale rather than 4.0. A common (though not universal) conversion is CGPA×9.5 for a percentage, or CGPA÷2.5 to approximate a 4.0-scale GPA — check your specific university's official conversion formula.

Frequently asked questions

Does every Pakistani university use the same grading scale? Most follow HEC's general 4.0-scale framework, but the exact percentage-to-grade mapping (what score counts as an A vs A-) can differ by institution — always cross-check with your own transcript policy.

Do W, I, or repeated courses affect GPA? Withdrawals (W) are typically excluded from GPA. Incompletes (I) usually convert to F if not resolved. Repeated courses often replace the old grade rather than averaging both — policies vary by university.
